THE CONCEPTS OF THE CULTURAL MODEL AND THE SEMI-INTELLECTUAL

The culture of a nation as understood by Slobodan Jovanović (1869–1958) encompasses all aspects of intellectual life, science, religion, ethics, literature, art, politics, law, army, economy, customs and leisure. The paper presents the phenomenon of a semi-intellectual as described and understood at the time the term was invented. It points to association with the concepts used in Bogdan Popović’s (1864–1944) “theory of the parvenu”. The semi-intellectual’s evolution ends with his taking over the position of the intellectual. The paper examines if the concept of the semi-intellectual as defined by S. Jovanovic is applicable to the present time.

LIBERALISM, POSITIVISM AND PATRIOTISM OF VLADIMIR JOVANOVIĆ

The unity of freedom, science and nation, viz. liberalism, positivism and nationalism, as well as his belief in two fundamental principles – freedom and justice, were the two lodestars of Vladimir Jovanović`s entire political work and his life credo. Although he was strongly inclined to the continental liberalism, he corrected it with Millian liberalism and embracement of the Westminster system, thus avoiding the radicalism of the French role model, which was followed by the prevalent majority of socialist and Marxian-oriented Serb intelectuals in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Vladimir Jovanović firmly belived that liberty was the right whose exercise must not be blocked out by the ideal of equality. As a positivist, he appreciated Herbert Spencer’s theory of evolution, organic interpretation of society and analogy between the natural and the social domain, according to which social phenomena could be reduced to natural laws. Under Mazzini’s influence he made a synthesis of liberalism and nationalism. Vladimir Jovanović`s son Slobodan Jovanović pointed out that unity of freedom, science and nation was not founded in science itself, but in rationalist philosophy. Liberalism, positivism and patriotism were not only concepts of Vladimir Jovanović`s political theory, but also ideological basis for his active political work.

THE MEDIA CULTURE OF ĐURČIĆI PEOPLE

The study of the media culture of the Đurčići rural micro-community members on the Papuk Mountain in Slavonia from 1945 to 1991 indicates integration of this population which followed global developments in the Yugoslav socialist state and also integration in McLuhan’s global village, in accordance with their financial capacities. Reception of the press, film, radio and television takes place at a collective level, a form typical of ”folk” in general, which opens the possibility for creating a media culture habitat in the family and in the village. Acceptance of new media, according to the old patterns and certain generational variations, confirms Eric Hobsbawm’s thesis that rural traditional patriarchal communities are not encapsuled and fossilized, and that their survival is possible thanks to the occurring changes. The new media in this micro-community have the integrative function.
