INTERNET MAGAZINES IN LIBRARIES

The paper focuses on the online editions of certain serial publications which are result of the technological progress of information technology, especially the Internet development. Electronic editions have caused major changes in the way libraries work, especially in those library services that now incorporate Internet services. The most important Internet service of a library is an internet collection which contains internet editions of certain serial publications, among other things. Both the concept of an online edition and its characteristics are explained, and certain forms of the editions are discussed (online newspapers, magazines, bulletins, yellow pages, guides). The relation between the printed and the online version is also discussed, as well as details concerning the conditions regarding access or subscription to online editions, and the duties of the library that incorporates online editions in its collections. KoBSON is a perfect example of a good solution for a coordinate acquisition of foreign science magazines. The paper also deals with the problem of (under-)usage of online collections, and suggests certain ways of educating users. The number of potential readers of online magazines is based on the published results of a survey concerning Internet users in Serbia. Online periodic publications are presented through the Deep Catalogue as well as the Digital Collections of National Library of Serbia. The conclusion states the advantages and disadvantages of both online and printed periodic publications.

WIKIPEDIA AND THE PROBLEM OF ELECTRONIC AGORA

Šezdesetih godina prošlog veka, kanadski teoretičar Marshall McLuhan tvrdio je da je “karakteritika svih medija da njihov sadržaj uvek predstavlja drugi medij”. Pola veka kasnije, u okviru medija “weba” dolazi do proliferacije virtuelnih toposa namenjenih produkciji sadržaja od strane većeg broja, uglavnom anomimnih, pro-zumenata.

POLEMICS IN SERBIAN PHILOSOPHY 1990-2010

This paper analyzes several significant polemics in Serbian philosophy, published in philosophical journals and daily papers during past two decades. These are polemics between Milorad Belančić and Slobodan Žunjić, Nenad Daković and Slobodan Žunjić, and Mihailo Marković and Aleksandar Prnjat, respectively. In the first polemic, the two authors discuss the ontological status of several philosophical terms; in the second one, authors negotiate the importance of translating and publishing F. Copleston’s A History of Philosophy, whilst in the third polemic, the two philosophers discuss the problem of paternalism, suggesting redefinition of some aspects of this problem.

THE CONCEPTS OF THE CULTURAL MODEL AND THE SEMI-INTELLECTUAL

The culture of a nation as understood by Slobodan Jovanović (1869–1958) encompasses all aspects of intellectual life, science, religion, ethics, literature, art, politics, law, army, economy, customs and leisure. The paper presents the phenomenon of a semi-intellectual as described and understood at the time the term was invented. It points to association with the concepts used in Bogdan Popović’s (1864–1944) “theory of the parvenu”. The semi-intellectual’s evolution ends with his taking over the position of the intellectual. The paper examines if the concept of the semi-intellectual as defined by S. Jovanovic is applicable to the present time.

LIBERALISM, POSITIVISM AND PATRIOTISM OF VLADIMIR JOVANOVIĆ

The unity of freedom, science and nation, viz. liberalism, positivism and nationalism, as well as his belief in two fundamental principles – freedom and justice, were the two lodestars of Vladimir Jovanović`s entire political work and his life credo. Although he was strongly inclined to the continental liberalism, he corrected it with Millian liberalism and embracement of the Westminster system, thus avoiding the radicalism of the French role model, which was followed by the prevalent majority of socialist and Marxian-oriented Serb intelectuals in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Vladimir Jovanović firmly belived that liberty was the right whose exercise must not be blocked out by the ideal of equality. As a positivist, he appreciated Herbert Spencer’s theory of evolution, organic interpretation of society and analogy between the natural and the social domain, according to which social phenomena could be reduced to natural laws. Under Mazzini’s influence he made a synthesis of liberalism and nationalism. Vladimir Jovanović`s son Slobodan Jovanović pointed out that unity of freedom, science and nation was not founded in science itself, but in rationalist philosophy. Liberalism, positivism and patriotism were not only concepts of Vladimir Jovanović`s political theory, but also ideological basis for his active political work.
